City CC
Dear QSCC members,
On behalf of City Cricket Club, I would like to express our sincere appreciation for the generous $5,000 contribution from the Queen Street Cricket Club Charity in support of our club’s youth and junior development programs. Your commitment to breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for young cricketers, particularly in regions like Northland, aligns perfectly with our club’s vision to drive participation, development, sportsmanship, and skill growth among boys and girls from all backgrounds. This support has been instrumental in strengthening our programs and making a meaningful impact this season.
Through your backing, we have been able to expand access to quality coaching, equipment, and facilities while also addressing financial and logistical barriers such as travel constraints. Many young people who would otherwise struggle to be involved in sport due to financial limitations have now been given the opportunity to participate, develop their skills, and build a lifelong love of the game. By removing these barriers, your generosity has not only allowed more young cricketers to play but has also inspired them to remain engaged in the sport and find ways to give back to the cricketing community in the future.
The impact of your support has been remarkable. We saw record participation, with 70 young boys and girls of all ages enjoying the top-class facilities at Cobham Oval. Their parents and whānau, many of whom had never attended cricket fixtures or coaching days before, were on the sidelines, providing support and encouragement. The positive feedback was humbling, and seeing the smiles on the young players’ faces was something special. One of the standout achievements this season was the introduction of our programs to 10 different nationalities, including Māori, Asian, and Pacific Island communities, many of whom have had limited access to cricketing opportunities. It has been inspiring to witness the emerging talent, with several of these young players earning selections in representative age-group teams, Māori and Asian Invitational squads—a first for the Northland region and a milestone for our club.
We understand the importance of providing quality experiences at both club and community levels, and thanks to your support, we were able to deliver quality programs with dedicated coaching staff. Supporting and valuing these volunteer coaches has been key, and their enthusiasm for continuing into next season speaks volumes about the impact of this initiative. Additionally, we were fortunate to collaborate with the ReSport Charitable Trust, a locally driven organisation that removes financial barriers in sport by providing new or gently used sports equipment. Through this connection, several young players who were new to the sport of cricket received the gear they needed to fully participate in our programs.
Thank you once again for your generosity and support. We appreciate your contribution and have made an effort to acknowledge it by promoting your organisation on our club’s social channels, newsletter as well as highlighting Queen Street Cricket Club on our training facilities partners board and signage displayed at Cobham Oval. Your support has made a lasting impact, and as a club, we look forward to continuing to grow the game and create more opportunities for young cricketers in our region.
Yours sincerely,
Sharlene Nelson (City Cricket Club Secretary)

Abby TreaderWe have granted Abby $3,000 over the last two years to help her with gear and coaching. She has a very promising future, and has shown great dedication to her career so far. Abby’s mother contacted us when she was 16 and attending Tararua College in Pahiatua, (40 minutes drive to Palmerston North). At the time she was playing for the Manawatu Senior Women’s team and the CD Under 19s, with the family making five return trips to Palmerston North each week.
In January Abby was named in the NZ Under 19 wider squad and her future indeed looks bright. Aria CameronAria is a very promising 15 year old, currently at Fielding High School. She is captain of the girls’ first XI and a pace bowler for the boys’ first XI! Last season she played Premier grade for the Marist CC, year 11-13 Manawatu Girls, CD under 17 and the Manawatu Women’s team.
She has international aspirations, a love of the game and enthusiasm to burn. We have given her a $2,000 grant which she intends to use for winter gym training, coaching and provincial tournament fees Cobham CC
Cobham CC is a fellow Kindred cricket club whose main focus is to nurture and foster Secondary Schools cricket in Northland. They currently have a coach involved with Whangarei BHS and propose to run several wider coaching clinics. We have offered $2,000 but haven’t confirmed details at this point.
Evolution Sports ChristchurchWe continue to support Dan Vann’s coaching in schools through grants of $2,000 for each of terns one and four. Dan runs programs on our behalf at Riccarton College and Shirley Boys High School, both worthy recipients of the funding.
St Ignatius of Loyola Catholic College
St Ignasius is a new school near Drury, starting this year with 339 students. They have an experienced coach in Luke Williams, and were seeking $20,000 for developing pitch and net facilities. The committee agreed to fund $5,000 towards the project.
The Willows CC's Tamai Sports Programme The recently finished cricket season has seen The Willows & Tamai Sports in partnership deliver its Cricket programme, specifically designed for Tamariki who otherwise would not have the opportunity to participate.
We were fortunate to partner with Dan Vann – Evolution Sport Coaching a QSCC partner to help deliver the coaching aspect of our programme. This season The Queen Street Cricket Club contributed significant funding to enable us to grow our programme to include 50 Tamariki, providing them with;
The support provided by QSCC was instrumental in our ability to deliver our programme, and grow it this season, and it has given us a platform to grow next season. Most importantly the support from QSCC has provided an opportunity for these Tamariki to be involved in Cricket, to learn new skills & make new friendships. The importance of Tamai cannot be understated, it has helped narrow the gap, to enable opportunity & participation. The Willows Cricket Club is greatly appreciative of the support provided by QSCC – it literally made the difference to the 50 Tamariki that participated in the Cricket programme in 2023-24. Kit Perera - Life through CricketWe are excited to be supporting Kit Perera, who is running after school coaching twice a week for Year 9 and 10 boys from Avondale College. He is looking to expand participation and grow the number of teams at the school. To help, we gave Kit $10,000 as part of our QSCC funding programme. Kit's philosophy extends to "whole of life" and becoming better people through cricket. When we visited we were really impressed with the turnout, enthusiasm, and skills of the boys. Kit also engages the boys by organising visits from cricket players such as Jeet Raval who is Avondale College alumni. Auckland Maori CricketTe Toa Whakaihuwaka 2022/23 - National Champions - Tāmaki Makaurau
Over the Easter Weekend Tāmaki Makaurau Maori Cricket Team competed in the inaugural National Maori Tournament. The Tournament represented all Major Associations of New Zealand with some highly skilled individuals representing the region, iwi, and whanau. Queen Street Cricket Club helped sponsor uniforms for the tournament, allowing players to look and feel professional. Throughout the tournament, Tāmaki Makarau remained undefeated and lifted the trophy at the end. Topped off by Jock McKenzie being named player of the tournament alongside Ben Brady and Fraser Campbell who also made the tournament side. Dan Vann - Evolution SportsThe QSCC granted Dan $2,000 for his coaching programs at Shirley Boys High and Riccarton College. We feel these are important schools to support as the cricketing landscape continues to narrow.
Waitakere CCWe again contributed to the Waitakere CC’s coaching program with a $10,000 grant. They employed two full-time Level One coaches going directly into low-decile West Auckland schools, mainly Primary and intermediate.
They also held two cluster days to try and get as many school kids and parents as they could for a fun day of cricket and to introduce the club. Hastings BHS
The club agreed to pay $2760 for indoor centre hire and $1600 for match day balls.

Whangarei BHSWe have contributed $1500 to Whangarei BHS towards a cricket trip to Australia. We've also contributed towards coaching for the students.
Cricket is in a good place at WBHS at present with a strong 1st XI and Under 15 teams as well as 25 players in the cricket academy. WBHS have one player in the Northland Mens side and two players in the Northern Districts Under 17 side. The greatest challenge they face is not having any school opposition in Northland. Auckland Maori CricketLast year we engaged with Michael Tillett, who has been the driving force behind establishing Tamaki Makaurau Maori Cricket. We supplied the men’s team uniforms for the inaugural inter-provincial championship, which they won. This year we donated a further $4,000 for women’s uniforms.
Michael has done a wonderful job, and has a passion for the project which the QSCC loves. He now has 61 Tane and 29 Wahine registered players. This year’s Nationals are to be hosted in Tamaki Makaurau on October 18-20, and we look forward to watching the growth in Maori Cricket continue Brittain WynyardWe’re extremely grateful to our new friends at Brittain Wynyard who donated a mountain of G & M gear, including six gear bags, 22 bats and a large number of pads and gloves, All gear was new, and either last year’s or surplus to requirements.
This was incredibly generous and we have so far dispatched full gear bags to Aorere and Alfriston Colleges, along with a dozen XL cream trousers to St Pauls College. Garry Wood Pasifika ClinicsReport on Pasifika project 2024:
The Pasifika schools cricket committee would like to acknowledge and thank the Queen Street Cricket Club for their recent financial assistance in both supporting the coaching program and in paying for the match playing shirts for the recent 2024 Rangitane secondary school tournament. The tournament was managed and run by NZ Cricket with a view to creating much better links and opportunities in cricket for players of either Maori or Pacific Island descent of secondary school age. This year's games consisted of three T20 games and was hosted in Auckland by the Cornwall Club at their Greenlane base. NZ Maori had a very strong squad that brought recent form and undoubted class to the games. This year the Pasifika boys and in particular the girls side provide much tougher opposition than year one. Much of this was attributable to the far more extensive squad preparation that was committed to from early the previous September. This coaching was funded by the Queen Street Cricket Club organisation for which the players, parents and coaches were extremely grateful to receive. One sign of the increasing depth and the increasing buy-in was that nine players from the girls squad were selected for either Samoa or the Cook Islands senior Women’s team to play in the Pacific Cup held in Auckland in January 2024. Four of the boys were included in the Cook Islands senior men’s train-on squad for the East Asia Pacific Regional qualifiers in August 2024. Another notable was the addition of three new coaches of Pacific Island heritage to the program. With the guidance of NZC and the support of organizations such as QSCC, this is a very real opportunity for perceptions and barriers to be removed for these communities. Garry Wood Sam MackinderSam is an outstanding prospect for Maori Women’s cricket. In her third year of a BSC at Massey, she has shone though age grade rep cricket . Last year she made the CD women’s team before being named in the inaugural Aotearoa Maori women’s team that competed for the Pacific Cup in January.
De La Salle CollegeEsteemed member, Ockert Visser kindly donated a complete bag of new gear, which we delivered to De La Salle College who continue to promote cricket as part of their PE programme.
Solomon VermeerWe contributed $2250 or half of the trip expenses for Sol to join the North Harbour Under 17 team’s tour of Sri Lanka. Pictured below in the first match, a win against the Pandura Cricket Academy. Sol opened the bowling and took two for 12 off his four overs.
Hooked on CricketHooked on Cricket remains our largest continual project with a commitment of $20,000 per annum.
It is widely popular and well supported by the contracted provincial players and the schools involved. Dennis Katsonis from the Cricket Players Assn has put together a fantastic video that captures the spirit and fun of the tournament day. Click on the image above to see the video Abby TreaderWe have again granted the highly promising Abby $1,500 for gear, coaching and travel expenses.
Last season, at the age of 16, Abby was selected for the Manawatu Women’s team, the CD Under 19 team, the CD A women’s team, and the Manawatu High Performance academy. She is hoping to make the CD Hinds this year. |
